Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

I’ve seen this on a number of blogs and whilst I haven’t been nominated  I’m doing it anyway!

1. A popular book or series that you didn’t like.

Fifty-Shades-of-Grey-by-E.L.-James

I don’t even know where to start with this one. And because I don’t like railing against authors and their work I will say only that I did not like the writing style and I thought the age/experience gap between the two main characters was not a good idea when dealing with this subject matter.

2. A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.

There is much debate over these books, especially now the TV series is seven seasons in. But I will always remember reading this as a late teen in the 1990s (I know! So long ago!) and enjoying them. I was a little surprised when the TV show came out and Elena had dark hair, but I was very happy with the casting choices for the Salvatore brothers, especially Damon who is one of my favourite characters in the books. So, whether nostalgia or good writing, it doesn’t matter. I love them.

3. A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with (warn about spoilers) or an OTP that you don’t like.

Please note, I have only read the first 11 books in the series and none of the spin off stories.

It may be that I was fond of this character because he was there in the beginning and for the first six (?) books he was her ‘love’ interest. But I wanted her with Jean-Claude not Micah.

I will be re-reading this series from the start again after I get through the other books on my TBR pile, but I was always annoyed at that.

4. A popular book genre that you hardly ever reach for.

romance-novel

I have MAD respect for people who write romance novels. What may seem like a trashy quick write is anything but. It is one of the most difficult genres to write so kudos where they are due. I personally am not a big fan of romance novels as a reader but I do dip my toe occasionally (besides the classics, most paranormal romance novels).

5. A popular or beloved character that you do not like.

I’ll just say it. I didn’t like Edward in this book. I’m probably not supposed to like him. Well, Mr Lewis, it worked. And that’s all I’ll say about that.

6. A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.

I’m not a fan of stream of consciousness or early 20th century Modernism. I have trouble connecting with much of the writing (though I do like Eliot). Virginia Woolf is good writer, I just can’t seem to connect with it.

7. A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing. (Examples “lost princess” “corrupt ruler” “love triangle” etc.)

Love triangles are becoming the new “it was a dream all along”. I understand that throughout your life you might like more than one person at a time but the longer these triangles go on, the more the main character (the one being “fought” over) looks like an asshole. Stop stringing them along and make a decision!!!

8. A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

Does it constitute a series? I did actually read the DaVinci Code. And then I stopped. They are exceptionally popular books, just not for me. It was a good premises, but I’d read it all before (not mentioning the lawsuit here, really, ahem). And there was not enough done to help suspend disbelief so we could believe certain plot ‘twists’. I won’t be reading the rest.

9. The saying goes “The book is always better than the movie or TV show adaptation” but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer to the book?

What I wish the book was. The movie stepped away from the novel in a number of places but I was actually happy about it. Tris was a much better character in the film than she was in the book. If you haven’t read the books yet, I won’t spoil here.
