After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.
Throne of Glass is the first in a series following the story of Celaena Sardothien, renowned assassin, and her attempt to achieve freedom from a life sentence in the salt mines. Calaena is offered a deal from the Crown Prince to become the King’s assassin for a four year stretch. She just has to win a tournament against the kingdom’s best thieves and killers.
I liked the world this was set in. It was interesting, intriguing, and I wanted more of it. The book is an action adventure, romance, and mystery in one.
But this is also LOVE TRIANGLE HELL!
Can we have one of these “kick ass heroines” NOT be more preoccupied with boys and what they think of her? And can we stop saying “kick ass heroines”. Because I think it’s just become a throw away line.
So, in the interest of you not having to read paragraphs about how the character of Celaena falls short of being this bad ass heroine assassin people are afraid of, I will tell you that the sub plot of the mystery is interesting. The exploration of the castle and its happenings is interesting.
I do HOPE that they expand this alleged “kick ass-ness” more so I can actually see it. Notwithstanding this, the fight scenes and the training was interesting.
